Day 1: Flight to Lisbon (we left at 5pm)

Day 2: Lisbon arrival (we arrived at 11:30am)

  • Explore historic Belem Neighborhood
  • Sites to see:
    • Monastery of Jeronimos
    • Maritime Museum
    • Berardo Museum of Modern Art
    • Belem Cultural Centre: Dali, Picasso, Warhol
    • Palacio de Belem – where the president lives
    • Belem tower
    • Discovery Monument (Padrao dos Descobrimentos)
    • Ponte 25 de Abril Bridge
  • Food & Drinks:
    • Eat “pastel de nata” at Pasteis de Belem – egg tart**
    • A Ginjinha for cherry liquor

Day 3: Sintra Day Trip

  • We did this tour to see the following sites:
    • Pena Palace (Palacio de Pena)
    • Town of Sintra (Sintra Vila)
    • Quinta da Regaleria
    • Cabo da Roca
    • Cascais

Day 4: Lisbon > Madeira

  • Fly Lisbon > Madeira** we rented a car on the island
    • Be sure you rent from the airport! We ended up renting from a downtown location and had to take a city bus into the city to get our car.
  • Drive to Viewpoint: Cabo Girao (sea overlook)
  • Monte Cable Cars (open 9am – 5:30pm)

Day 5: Central Madeira – Hike Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo

  • This is rated as the most beautiful hike in Madeira, you need 6-8 hours to complete and must be in good physical condition.

Day 6: Northwestern Madeira

  • Hike: Levada Das 25 Fontes/Risco (you’ll need 3-4 hours and will see waterfalls, lagoon, and beautiful levadas)
  • Roadtrip stops:
    • Sao Vicente
    • Porto Moniz (pools)
    • Viewpoint: Miradouro Garganta Funda

Day 7: Eastern Madeira

Day 8: Madeira > Porto

  • Morning flight Madeira > Porto
  • We booked the Calem Caves Wine Tour/Tasting at 3:20pm, it was fabulous and a great place for souvenir Port 🙂
  • Recommended must sees in the city:
    • Livraria Lello (old bookstore), next to Porto University (Hogwarts inspiration)
    • Tower of Clerigos
    • Cross upper deck of Luiz I bridge by foot and watch the sunset at Serra do Pilar
    • Majestic Café – where JK Rowling wrote the first HP book! (open til 11:30pm)

STAY: Sheraton Porto Hotel & Spa

Day 9: Porto > Lisbon

  • Crystal Palace Gardens – opens at 8am
  • We took the 10:15am Rede Expressos Bus from Porto > Lisboa Oriente
  • That night in Lisbon, we bought tickets to see Sporting Clube de Portugal!

STAY: DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Lisbon – Fontana Park

Day 10: Lisbon

  • Tour the Alfama Neighborhood (Fado restaurant/music)
    • Start at Castelo de Jorge, and get lost!
    • Take the 28 historic tram (24 hour pass for 2 euro), stops at “Portas Sol”
    • Coffee at Portas do Sol
    • Feira de Ladra flea market
    • Sunsets in the area:
      • Miradouro da Senhora do Mont
      • Miradouro de Santa Luzia
  • Bairro Alto neighborhood – Dinner, drinks, etc

Day 11: Lisbon > Boston
